BSGT Annual Conference 21-23 April 2009

Sponsor Information

Background
BSGT was established in 2003 to accelerate scientific progress and promote ethical and thorough transfer of gene- and cell-based technologies from the laboratory into the clinic. Key to this is communication and the free flow of information between scientists in this field which leads to better collaborations and the sharing of knowledge and resources. We have found that the annual conferences we hold provide a very effective forum for this specialised scientific debate, particularly to enhance the education of younger scientists and clinicians.

Annual Conference
Each year at the annual conference we aim to offer a scientific programme that fully represents the variety of science and medicine under the joint umbrella of gene- and cell-based therapies. A comprehensive programme has been developed by the Science Chair Professor George Dickson of Royal Holloway and the Scientific Committee. As in previous years the conference will be preceded by the popular Scientific Education symposium (aimed at students and new entrants to the field) with talks on a range of vector systems and delivery.

Public Engagement
BSGT is also working to improve the public and media perception and understanding of gene and cell therapy. Key to this will be the BSGT Public Engagement Day ‘Journeys in the Genetic Jungle’, which will precede the scientific conference on 21st April. This event aims to show the potential of our work, and to demonstrate how carefully the science is considered and regulated. In this way the Society hopes to generally raise awareness and engage with the public about human gene and cell therapy, but also to inspire young people to consider becoming scientists.

Support
BSGT aims to provide an intensive forum for scientific debate that is inclusive to all scientists, especially students. Accordingly we maintain registration costs as low as possible; indeed student registration is cheaper than cost price. However, this does mean the Society needs to secure financial support in order to break even and we offer a variety of options.
